The café-lined stretch of Ponsonby Road running from Arch Hill through to Three Lamps is experiencing its strongest trading period since before the pandemic, according to new pedestrian count data released by Heart of the City. Weekend foot traffic for February 2026 was up 18 per cent compared to the same period last year, with weekday counts also rising by 12 per cent. The figures suggest a sustained recovery for the hospitality precinct, which was hit hard by Covid-era restrictions and roadworks.
New openings fuel optimism
At least five new food and beverage operators have opened along the strip since November, including a Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant and a specialty wine bar that has drawn attention from across Auckland. Business association chair Linda Faumuina said the numbers reflected growing confidence among operators and landlords. 'There's a real energy on Ponsonby Road right now. People are choosing to invest here because they believe in the future of this precinct.'
Challenges remain
Despite the positive trend, some business owners say staffing shortages and rising commercial rents remain significant headwinds. One café owner, who asked not to be named, said their rent had increased by 22 per cent at their last lease renewal. Heart of the City is planning a series of street events through autumn to maintain momentum, including a night market and live music series.
